Talk Derby To Me! {Kentucky Derby Mini-Unit}

Halleluia!  PTL!  I did it and Derby is still 4 days away!

Dang.  I really am sorry.  Oh, well, there’s always next year right?!

BUT, because Derby IS only FOUR DAYS away, you can buy this $5.00 pack on sale for $3.00 through Friday!  {Click the preview pic below to check out my Derby Days Mini-Unit.}

We started this unit today with a good ol’ KWL chart.  ‘Scuse the grainy cell pics.

We also read a book from our Treasure’s series called Watching Horses Grow.  I actually excluded it from my small groups a few weeks back so we could use it during whole group reading this week.  Most of the horse vocab in the unit came from this book.

The kiddos also completed an individualized KWL chart, a horse vocabulary matching activity, a guided art  horse drawing, and a mini-book of horse facts!  Shoo, it was a busy day!  But, I’m not complaining – if there’s any time of year to be busy, this is certainly it!!!!  Downtime = Crazytime.  Times 45.  And crazytime is the last thing I need in my room these last 19 days!  (NINETEEN!!!!!)

Here are some other fun things you can find in the mini-unit…

Bless his heart.  He’s such a good sport when mommy needs a model.  I’m sure I’m going to get paid back in spades for it some day.

So, anyway, that’s my week so far.  Monday is OVER.

Y’all have a good one!!!!

We don't do anything in relation to the derby here in TN, but I am trying to think of an excuse to buy! Adorable.

Your KWL chart looks great. How do you write so neat as they throw out ideas?!?! The fact that you write 'Nay!!!' on their papers shows just what a fun and spunky teacher you are. Love it!

Love this unit! We are in the middle of your Wizard of Oz unit now, and the kids are having a ball! The best part is, that The Wizard of Oz is on the book list for first grade for the CCGPS next year! Thanks for all that you do!

Wow! That is so original. If I was handing out awards for originality, you would get it! I might even have to change my plans for next week and incorporate some of your ideas! Thanks you for the great price!

Love this unit! It is absolutely fantastic and I am so excited about starting it with my kiddos, focusing primarily on horses. Could I ask you to be a little more specific about what you had them do for their little fact books? (I love the directed drawing idea, by the way.) You are so creative--thanks for all the inspiration!

I want to say a BIG THANK YOU! I have never watched the Derby, never been interested in horses, or horse racing. The whole 1st grade was on a field trip and I stayed with the ones who didn't go. We spent ALL day on your unit! We looked up all the horses, decided who we wanted to win, made the horses, labels them, LEARNED A LOT about horses, and had a grand ole time! I just got finished watching my first ever Derby, and I'm pretty much hooked! Thank you so much!! I hope my kids come to school Monday and tell me they were able to watch it too!
